Drinking in Germany

Reddit user Hauptbahnhof, answering the question “Germany has a lower drinking age than the United States. How does that play out in Germany?”

Kids start drinking here around 13 or 14, and going out to bars or clubs legally at 16. It seems as though a lot of kids are getting drunk on the weekends, Friday or Saturday nights, and then doing it all again the next weekend. However, by the time people reach 21 or 22, they seem to have grown out of constant drinking. I kinda like this better than in the US, because drinking so much seems almost like “oh, that’s just kids being kids”. Also, in general, drinking seems to be much more a part of the culture here, and having a beer, wine, or some sekt is almost expected.

  1. I don’t like beer, but I’m still jealous :s

  2. Methinks one should get kids utterly, miserably plastered at age ten. With any luck they’ll give it up for life.

  3. 16 is very less age to start drinking
